10 Skin care mistakes that could be damaging your skin

With elaborate skincare regimens taking the beauty world by storm, achieving #flawless, beautiful  skin is the end goal for many beauty lovers (including us!). But, as much of a skincare pro we are, their are quite a few common skin care mistakes that’s leading to all the skin problems that we face like frequent acne and blemishes or extremely dry or too oily skin. Keep reading to find out the 10 skincare mistakes you’re making and how to fix them so that you can get that glowing skin you’ve always dreamt of.

Not Focusing on your Skin Type

The first key to a good at-home skin care routine is knowing your specific skin type and treating your skin concerns accordingly. The wrong formulas can wreak havoc on your skin. If your skin feels tight or itchy year round, especially after cleansing, or you always feel lightweight moisturizer is not enough then you mostly have dry skin. You might also experience some flakiness or scaling of skin. Oily skin on the other hand is when you notice a lot of excess oil on your face and you feel like you want to wash your face again midday.

Oily skin also faces skin concerns like black/whiteheads, pimples or cystic acne – all this due to clogged pores. Understanding your skin type is an important first step in discovering the most effective way to take care of your skin. While all skin types benefit from basic skincare routines that include cleansers, moisturizers and SPF, which formula you use will depend on what type of skin you have.

Leaving your Makeup on at Night

We’re all guilty of doing it from time-to-time: sleeping with our make-up on is quite common but for many reasons it is quite harmful for our skin health. Sleeping with your make-up on can clog pores, cause breakouts, result in eye irritation and the list goes on! Your skin needs time to breathe and so remove makeup every single night before you go to bed with an oil-based makeup remover or micellar water. Be sure to thoroughly cleanse your skin until there’s no residue of makeup left. Sleeping with your eye makeup on causes significant irritation.

This can lead to red, puffy, itchy eyes from the eyeshadow and mascara flaking and rubbing into your eyes and the delicate skin around your eyes. While it might be hard to get into the habit of removing your makeup after a tiring, hectic day, trust us – it’s one of the biggest faux pas skincare mistakes you can make.

Using Face Wipes to Clean your Face

While wipes are one of the easiest ways to remove your makeup at the end of a long day, they definitely are not a replacement to actually washing or cleansing your face. This is one of the most important skincare mistakes you need to avoid as the wipes are not actually formulated to remove makeup. They don’t necessarily have ingredients that can break down all of your face oils and makeup, causing gunk to stay in and clog your pores. Plus, a lot of makeup removal wipes have alcohol, which can cause irritation to sensitive skin.

Not Washing your Makeup Brushes and Tools

Makeup brushes hold on to more than foundation or powder such as bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells. Each time we use a really dirty makeup brush we are applying possibly all those things on our face which can clog our pores and can lead to skin irritation and acne. You can create your own DIY Natural makeup cleanser using baby liquid soap or any unscented liquid castile soap and adding 2-3 drops of tea tree essential oil or lavender essential oil. Use a dispenser bottle to store it.

Not Exfoliating Properly or Over-Exfoliating

In the quest to get smoother, much more polished skin, a lot of people have aggressive exfoliating treatments that are actually injuring their skin. Over-exfoliation can damage your skin’s moisture barrier, which in turn can result in a quite a lot of skin problems – like inflammation, acne, irritation and sensitivity. The first thing you need to focus on is knowing your skin type –  dry, combination/oily or normal skin. Then you can figure out an exfoliating regimen that works best for you.

  • Normal Skin: Exfoliate 2-3 times a week (depending on how your skin has been reacting that week)
  • Combination/Oily Skin: Exfoliate 3 times a week
  • Dry Skin: Exfoliate 2 times a week

Skip rubbing harsh beaded granule based body scrubs on your skin and damaging it even more and instead opt for fruit-derived enzyme scrubs that have AHAs or lactic acids – these will take off dead skin cells leaving your skin unharmed. Be sure to keep your exfoliation routine to a minimum of 2-3 times per week.

Not Applying the Right Amount of Skincare Products

A lot of time we end up putting too much of our skincare products thinking the more the better. But that doesn’t necessarily work in this context and that’s one huge skincare mistake you need to avoid. Not every product is to be applied in a standard size that fits all. Depending on your issue and the product, it is important to know how much of it you need to apply in order for it to be effective. So we’ve made it easier for you!

Have a look here at the list of products that you mostly use on a daily basis for skincare and how much of them to actually apply:

  • Pea-sized or a little less than that: Eye creams, serums and other treatments
  • Little more than pea-sized: Exfoliant, masks, night cream and day cream
  • Dime sized or grape-sized: Cleanser, toner, sunscreen and moisturizer

Not Moisturising Enough

It’s easy to fall under the trap of thinking that oily or combination skin does not need moisturisation. Somehow that is very far from the truth, in fact, a lot of us have oily but dehydrated and dull skin. Once you start truly moisturizing your skin, your skin actually is back in balance and doesn’t produce the excess greasiness you experience. Applying your moisturizer correctly, boosts hydration in your skin, prevents flaking and dullness, and creates a protective layer of moisture that lasts all day. It also helps anti-aging ingredients and other treatment products work better.

Forgetting to Use Sunscreen

If there is one skin care tip to be given by a dermatologist, it will be to wear SPF every day. This rule doesn’t just apply to the summer months or your vacation days on the beach. While you may be spending less time outdoors in winters, UV radiation can be every bit as harmful in all seasons, which means your skin is still at risk of developing sunburn, dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles making it crucial to wear a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher that protects against UVA and UVB rays all through 365 days.

Using Skincare in the Wrong Order

This is one of the most common skincare mistakes that many of us do. It’s vital to know the correct order in which to apply your skincare products for them to give you the desired results. A general rule of thumb is the lightest skincare products and those with the most beneficial ingredients go on first, then your heavier creams and you always end with your SPF (liquids > gels and then creams).

The standard flow would be to first remove your makeup, then use a cleanser, followed by an exfoliator then toner, use treatment products like serums, mists and then follow it up with an eye cream, moisturizer and finally facial oil (if needed) and then SPF. Spot treatments should be applied before serums and work best when applied in nighttime skincare routine. Acne treatment based products should be applied on bare skin so that you reap all of the benefits of acne fighting formula.

Not Drinking Enough Water

We cannot stress more on this! Drinking an adequate amount of water daily is important for overall health because water aids in good digestion, circulation and it’s important to keep yourself hydrated for naturally healthy skin. Eating the right food and consumption of enough 7-8 glasses of water will do wonders to your skin. If your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will lead to skin feeling dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin is much more prone to wrinkling.

If drinking water is something that is always something you forget to do, fill a water bottle in the morning and keep it close by to track how much you’re drinking. Eating water-dense fruits and veggies like cucumbers, melons, berries, lemons and limes is also a great way to supplement your fluid intake.

Now that you know what skincare mistakes you’re making, go a step ahead and work on avoiding all of them. It’s just the matter of staying on top of things and the result will be amazingly healthy and glowing skin!
